What are the best ways to showcase your problem-solving skills in an interview?

  1. Prepare examples

One of the best ways to showcase your problem-solving skills is to prepare some examples from your previous or current work experience that demonstrate how you applied them in different scenarios. Think of situations where you faced a problem, used a specific method or tool to solve it, and achieved a positive outcome. Try to choose examples that are relevant to the role and the organization you are applying for, and that highlight your facilitation skills as well. For instance, you could talk about how you facilitated a brainstorming session, used a SWOT analysis, or implemented a feedback loop.

  1. Use the STAR method

When you are asked to describe a situation where you used your problem-solving skills, use the STAR method to structure your answer. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This method helps you provide a clear and concise explanation of what the problem was, what your role and goal were, what steps you took to solve it, and what the outcome and impact were. Using the STAR method also shows that you can analyze and communicate your problem-solving process effectively.

  1. Demonstrate your mindset

Another way to showcase your problem-solving skills is to demonstrate your mindset and attitude towards problems. Show that you are proactive, curious, creative, and collaborative. For example, you could mention how you seek out new challenges, ask open-ended questions, experiment with different ideas, and involve others in your problem-solving process. You could also share how you learn from your mistakes, adapt to changing circumstances, and seek feedback and improvement.

  1. Ask questions

Asking questions is not only a way to clarify the problem and gather more information, but also a way to showcase your problem-solving skills. By asking questions, you show that you are interested, engaged, and eager to find the best solution. You also show that you can think critically, logically, and creatively. Some examples of questions you could ask are: What is the root cause of the problem? What are the criteria for a successful solution? What are the possible alternatives and trade-offs? How will the solution be implemented and evaluated?

  1. Solve a case study

Sometimes, you may be asked to solve a case study or a hypothetical problem as part of your interview. This is a great opportunity to showcase your problem-solving skills in action. To solve a case study, you need to apply a systematic and structured approach, such as the following steps:

  • Define the problem and the objective,
  • gather and analyze the data,
  • generate and evaluate the options,
  • recommend and justify the solution, and
  • summarize the key points.

You also need to demonstrate your facilitation skills by engaging with the interviewer, asking for feedback, and presenting your solution clearly and confidently.

  1. Here’s what else to consider

This is a space to share examples, stories, or insights that don’t fit into any of the previous sections. What else would you like to add?
